Seal Pups

Seal pups on the rocks at Cardigan IslandSeal pups are born here in September and October.

Some are born out of sight, on the shingle at the backs of the caves. Others are born on the rocks at the bottom of high coves, in which case they are visible from the safely-fenced cliff-tops of the farm park.

The pups have fluffy white coats when they are born. They remain on the rocks until they are weaned at three weeks.

The mother comes ashore on the rising tide to suckle her pup. Her milk is so rich that the pup will grow from 30 pounds weight at birth to 90 pounds at three weeks when it will enter the sea.

Over this period the pup moults and loses its white coat as it turns grey.
